Tracy McMurtry - Franklin Motor Company
I graduated from Cumberland University in 1993. I took my LSAT and was headed to Samford University for Law School when the owner of Franklin Motor Company (Nashville) said, “why don’t you come hang out with me for the summer.” I was working my usual construction job in my off seasons and thought, why not? I explained to him I knew nothing about the automotive industry, and he said, “don’t worry I can teach you.” Needless to say, it’s been a long summer.
In 2002 I purchased Franklin Motor Company from the gentleman who asked me to work for him that summer. In 2005, I expanded to open Cunningham Motor Company (TN) and in 2007 I opened Car Credit (TN). I opened Cal Tenn Financial in 2008. Cal Tenn served as an RFC to my three dealerships. In 2012, I partnered with a local bank and wrote a subprime lending program and we were off to the races. The finance company became so busy I sold Cunningham Motors and combined Franklin Motors and Car Credit into one dealership in 2013. In 2015 Cal Tenn started dealerships in Georgia and Florida, which we currently operate today.
Currently, I run the day to day operations of Cal Tenn Financial, which includes funding, purchasing and selling not only my dealership’s receivables but for other dealerships as well. I oversee the operations of the dealerships with the help of the excellent staff we have been fortunate to retain over the years. With 27 years of the industry now under my belt, I am ready for that hungry college grad to come work for me!!
I am married for 20 years now (pretty sure that is a record in our industry) and have 3 beautiful children. We are currently very active with the Humane Society in Nashville. Over the years we have been on the board for the Nashville Chapter for United Cerebral Palsy Foundation, Davidson County Foster Programs and as many youth and animal organizations as we can assist. Our family also has “adopted siblings” from Thembelihle School in Africa that we correspond with. We are proud sponsors/fans of the Nashville Predators and Tennessee Titans.
Over the years I have witnessed many changes in the automotive industry. Many times, it feels as if we are navigating in the dark through rough waters. The best advice I can give is remember, it is a marathon not a sprint!!
